Interview with Elizaveta, EVJ Designer and Founder
How do you describe to people what you do and your design style?
First and foremost EVJ is all about the contemporary. I aim to bring important elements in the world around me and reflect these into jewellery that is wearable and in tune with fashion. These important things include modern city culture, contemporary art and my personal vision. The last of these is a very personal one: Jewellery that is designed for a traveller by a traveller.
To get more of an idea take a look at the titles of my collection: ‘Tomorrow is another country’ is heavily inspired by the popular tattoo culture. Jewellery can make just as much of a statement about the wearer but without staining the skin.
'Black Star' is a range if ear wear that allows you to decorate this part of your body without piercing. One can get bored with that tattoo or piercing - my jewellery allows you to constantly evolve your look without making the permanent changes.
I write for GEM-A-PORTER, as part of my role I travel the world and seek out inspiration. Part of this involves just letting go! It’s a wonderful feeling to just immerse oneself in art, typography and beauty.
What sort of comments do you get about your designs?
I adore travelling the world and getting a response from those who view my work for the first time. There has been so much positive feedback especially from Europe, South America and Asia. The ‘handwritten’ style jewellery is a huge hit with my followers. The fact that these pieces are created in London means that they will have much of the city’s influence in the design. I have had a great reaction from people about the gritty and urban chic that the pieces reflect!
I love transparent jewellery and through designing have found that this style also has a huge fan base! The rings and necklaces in particular have been very popular.
What is your background?
I was born in Russia but at present I am London based. My background has been a very mixed one. My entrepreneurial family is a huge inspiration, they have always encouraged me to be involved in decision making from a young age. Fortunate enough to have worked in Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Vienna, NYC, Moscow, Paris and Milan. So as you can imagine I caught the travel bug early on. Since then I have gone on to live in four different countries and am soon moving to Brazil. It’s the dynamism that is in all areas of my life that I want to include in my designs.
Tell us who your personal favourite designers are and why?
Designers fascinate me and I have many style inspirations. But to narrow things down I would have to choose Phoebe Philo for French Luxury brand Celine.
The story behind the big name designers also intrigues me. Laurence Graff was a jewellery designer who worked his way up from very humble beginnings in the East End of London. Through sheer effort and determination he became one of the most recognised names in fine jewellery. I adore such qualities in people; they only serve to inspire me even more!
Bravery is also something I admire in designers. Alexander Wang epitomizes this trait for me. At only 18 he dropped out of Parson’s New School for Design in New York to launch his own ladies ready to wear collection. He has never looked back and now designs for his own brand and Balenciaga.
What about the design process itself, the concept, and production to the shelves.
I design all EVJ pieces myself and I work directly with a team of highly skilled craftsmen in London to make each a reality. Each bracelet and necklace is handcrafted at the hands of skilled goldsmiths. These guys really know what they are doing! Their years of expertise and knowledge of materials is channeled into creating jewellery with character.
How do you think your brand has developed?
EVJ is constantly evolving like the designs, as a result so will the other aspects of the business. However for me it is important that EVJ always keeps it’s personality. I would hate for it to turn into a faceless and emotionless business. Fake marketing and over done PR is not what I am about at all! Part of the excitement for me is watching EVJ grow day by day as a brand.
What do you hate most about your job?
I wouldn’t necessarily say that I ‘hate’ anything about my job, but I know that there certainly are aspects that I enjoy more than others. For example the creative aspects that allow my imagination to soar. This is even more so when I am indulging in sugar! My absolute favourite are the chocolates orange by Parisian chocolatier Michel Cluizel.
What are your main achievements and what do you aim to achieve now?
My achievements have been varied and in different fields to the one I am now working in. I studied Gemology in New York after gaining BSc Management in London. After this I completed an MSc in Trade and Finance. I have had training from Goldman Sachs, London Stock Exchange and BP. It was from this vast experience that I learnt that the corporate path was not for me. Jewellery is my love and my path; I discovered this after having been a jewellery editor.
I have received recognition through the fabulous responses on my collections so far. Also as a blogger in the jewellery and fashion world I have met some great personalities and designers. I have been fortunate enough to collaborate with some talented actresses on my collections. One very recent example being my NYC friend Sophia Sassoon.
What advice would you have for anyone starting out in (your field)?
Starting a new business can be a daunting prospect even for someone with as much experience as I had. But one thing I really would suggest is to write down all your idea’s before you begin. This includes your business plan. Take into consideration all the fine details. The more you think about these now the less likely you will hit a problem later on!
Why do you think British design stands out on the global stage?
British design has always been hot! Right from the 1960’s when Brit pop first began. Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and now Agyness Deyn are all British fashion icons. But also just take a look at artists like Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and more recently street artist Banksy. It’s edgy and really urban, a city style that is unlike in any other in the world.
I take so much of my inspiration from Isabella Blow, a magazine editor who instantly recognized British talent when she saw it! Philip Treacy, Alexander McQueen, Models Sophie Dahl and Stella Tennant were also first spotted by her. Reading her life story in ‘Blow by Blow’ changed the way I see British art and design! It’s one I would highly recommend to all.

London Jewellery week will soon be upon us. London’s Somerset house will be home to a whole host of exclusive events throughout the beginning of June.
London Jewellery Week is often compared to London Fashion week. This is a chance for some of the United Kingdom’s most exclusive and contemporary jewellers to showcase their collections. London Jewellery week draws in thousands of visitors every year to lavish Somerset House and its popularity is growing.
One of the main events happening during the week is ‘Treasure 2013’. The show has been running for six years and is already become one of the most recognised dates on the jewellery calendar! Along with preparing for Treasure, it has been a very exciting few weeks for all at EVJ. I have been busy creating a series of brand new campaigns for the various new collections. This has included working with photography and video, experimenting and working with the material, discovering it’s tactility. Combining all of these to create a design that has EVJ’s solid concept at it’s heart. EVJ believe that jewellery designers are artists in their own right and strive to express themselves.

The advantages to wearing an ear cuff? You can decorate your ears without having to have them pierced. The best way to glam up your ears, simply slide them onto your earlobe and gently squeeze until they are secure. Wear them on the side of your ear or slide them across the top, the choice is yours when it comes to doing your own individual style. Shop EVJ Black Star Collection online.
EVJ choose to create ear cuffs as the centre piece of the new Black Star collection. They are an alternative to the more traditional body jewellery and a must this season!
EVJ ear cuffs are light and easy to wear, so much easier to put on than other more chunky pieces of jewellery. They do not hang or weigh down causing discomfort. The design is created to be more dynamically secure than other ear cuffs. The lighter structure that is incorporated into the look will ensure that your EVJ ear cuff will sit comfortably on your ear.
They come in a range of colour ways: 9ct white gold, 9ct yellow gold and black rhodium plated 9ct white gold.
Want something extra personal? EVJ give you the chance to customise your very own piece from the Black Star collection. Tailor make your ear cuff to include diamonds, yellow or blue sapphires. You also have the option of a 18ct gold setting too should you so wish.
EVJ’s Black Star collection brings to you a cute street style combined with the more precious fine jewellery.
The Black Star range will soon be available online and at select stores. In the meantime take a look at EVJ’s brand new collection for yourself on the EVJ website. Also meet the inspirational horse Black Star who features in the campaign video.
The idea for the Black Star collection came about through a visit that the designer made to the British countryside. Elizaveta came across a beautiful horse named Black Star and instantly fell in love with the combination of power and beauty that this wonderful creature possessed. So much so that she created a collection inspired by these wonderful traits.
Model and actress Sophia Sassoon is well known for her role as the stunning love interest on Made in Chelsea. The gorgeous TV reality star stole the limelight during her time on the show. Sophia charmed us with her quirky but very feminine style, one that has turned her into something of a style icon. We at EVJ are pleased to announce that Sophia Sassoon is collaborating with us on a daring new collection. The 'Wild at Heart' collection will be incorporating Sophia’s unique look with EVJ’s own style philosophies. A superbly stylish combination and we cannot wait for the result!
When one thinks of EVJ the style ideals that spring to mind include feminine and delicate accessories with an edgy street style. Jewellery that has meaning at it’s core along with possessing a great look.
EVJ aims to ignite the imagination by creating pieces that hold a deep and personal meaning to the wearer. Jewellery that proves words can be just as powerful as images when it comes to how we adorn our bodies.
Tattoo’s are a huge part of what inspires Eliza Veta in her designs. This form of body art is one of the most expressive and intense around. Creating and expressing through our own bodies is such a deep concept one that takes accessorising to the next level. Skulls, roses, swallows and anchors are just a few of the more traditional tattoo looks that have been around for many years. However many stain their skin with words and images that mean the most to them. The names of beloved children for example, pets or family members, these tattoo serve as a daily reminder of the love that is still felt for them. This idea is just one that is at the core of the EVJ design philosophy.
'Tomorrow is another country' is just one example of what you can find at EVJ. The future certainly is unchartered territory! the terrain of your day can be either rough or smooth or perhaps somewhere in between. You will be the ever intrepid explorer ready to take on whatever comes your way.
Other delightfully inspirational sentences include ‘Never give up’, want to exist in the moment then the ‘Live your dreams’ necklace is for you. Feel that you are born lucky? ‘Truly blessed’ will be your perfect jewellery piece. Which of these superb and poignant words shouts out to you the most? Wear your chosen one on a bracelet or necklace for a look that’s incredibly on trend while attracting discussion on a profound level. EVJ know that body adornment is not just about accessorising that outfit, it’s so much more then just a pretty feminine necklace or cocktail ring. EVJ gives anyone the chance to express what they are about, their beliefs and where they want to be dare to go there with EVJ.
